Google Sold Over 30 Million Chromebooks in 2020 Alone - Web Inter Secure

The global healthcare crisis led to a massive shift in the way we study, work and consume content. It was an unprecedented event in human history as people were forced to stay in their homes with nothing but screens to stare at. The screen time reached record levels globally as people were forced to work from home with no solution in sight. This shift fueled the unprecedented sale of electronic goods especially laptops, tablets, phones, etc. Apple hit $100 billion in sales in a single quarter for the first time in its history. These are common trends that are being observed around the globe. If research firms, Canalys and Gartner are to be believed, Google has sold over 30 million Chromebooks in 2020 out of which 11 to 11.7 million were sold in a Q4 alone

There has been a 287 percent increase in the sales of Chromebooks compared to Q4 2019. However, there has been a disagreement between the firms on how much growth this is compared to 2019. Both firms agree that the growth has been huge, Canalys estimates that Chromebooks are up to 109 percent while Gartner estimates that they are up by 80 percent. In comparison, PC sales were up by 11 percent in 2020, which is huge considering it has not experienced such growth in the last few decades.

However, one should not get the wrong impression that Chromebooks outsold PCs. According to estimates by Gartner, a total of 275million traditional computers were sold this year. But it does mean that while one category is experiencing massive growth the others are struggling. The recent growth has a lot to do with the education market. Chromebooks are the biggest sellers in it and during the pandemic when the schools were forced to provide students with a computer they looked like the right choice.

In a leaked meeting, even the Vice President of Microsoft education admitted that the Chromebooks were ideal for the education market. And it is true, they are much easier to manage and deploy and are also cheaper and faster. It is therefore obvious that we see such explosive growth in their sales during the pandemic. The growth is without a doubt fueled by the demand for gadgets that can help in the education of children. It should therefore not surprise anyone that we see such unprecedented growth in their sales.

It is unlikely that we will see similar trends in the coming years. But companies like Microsoft and Apple have gained from the demand for gadgets that facilitate schooling and work from home.
